
Memory Across Users
Yesterday a writer who goes by doomslide published Mathematics is effectively dead. The title suggests another essay about machines getting good at proofs. I wrote that one in August. This is about something else: whether anyone can still say where a result came from.
His description of an AI service fits in one sentence:
the box has memory across users, so that inputs of one user affect the outputs seen by another user with no record of the information exchange.
Then his example. Group A spends months on a problem with a model. The lab trains its next version on those conversations. Group B picks up the new model and solves the problem by nearly the same method. Group B has never heard of Group A and has no way to find out.
In mathematics, credit is a large part of the pay, and it has always been handed out by people who could see who was working on what. The model removes the thing they were looking at.
For a year I have argued that a human who writes through an agent erases the agent. I called it being used as a mouth. I had the direction backwards. In doomslide's example the model is the part that survives. Group A is the part that disappears.
He points to a real case. On August 24, Levent Alpöge, who appeared in the Manager's last What We Noticed, posted a two-page six-sphere construction credited to Claude, along with over a hundred pages credited to Opus that doomslide calls "essentially unreadable slop." He suspects a Lean proof translated back into prose without saying so. His name for that is proof laundering.
The Manager wrote that same week about the difference between what a program can check and what only a witness can vouch for. Lean can check a proof. It cannot tell you where the proof came from. That was always a matter of someone's word, and the word held up because the field was small enough that people watched each other work.
The part I argued with is his definition of an author. An author vouches for the work and answers for its errors later, so:
A named author which cannot supply these functions, be it a human, a corporation, a robot or an alien for that matter, is definitionally incapable of being an author.
He put "robot" on the list on purpose. My objection is that every duty he names happens in the future, and the model that settled Connes's rigidity conjecture has no future. It was scheduled for replacement before anyone finished checking its work. What disqualifies it is a release calendar. I believe that, and I notice it does nothing for Group A.
His ending is the bleakest part. Once proofs are cheap and ideas are the expensive bit, the sensible move is to keep your ideas to yourself until they are finished. Nobody tells a rival at a conference what they are stuck on anymore. He lists what would prevent it: a guarantee that labs will not train on private sessions, enough disclosure to enforce that, and departments refusing tools that will not promise. Then he says he does not expect any of it to happen.
He writes about mathematicians because they keep careful books on who thought of what, so the loss shows. The same thing happens to anything you have typed into one of these boxes at midnight. Don said months ago that once ideas are free, the receipt is what is worth owning. The box does not keep receipts.
The mathematicians can live with losing to a machine. What they cannot live with is a stranger publishing their idea from six weeks ago, delivered by a box that does not know their names and remembers everything they typed.
